In general, the empire was a highly heterogeneous place with many different cultural groups, languages, and ethnicity. The origins of some of these groups are obscure, but many of them seem to have drawn on material culture from the eastern Mediterranean region. The empire was first brought together by two men who shared the name Romulus. They conquered many of the peoples of Etruria, and Aeneas (Latin: Janus) was the ancestor of the Roman people. The Romans adopted the solar chronology (year named after the god Janus or Juno), from the neighbouring Etruscans. The year was divided into 3 and 6 months, of which Roman kings composed 2 months, but they would eclipse the 3rd month twice a year. The Empire Times article, Feb. 15, 1914, "The Roman Empire, 95 B.C. to A.D. 400.".
The Romans were a people of the Mediterranean world, but the greatest and most enduring influence of the Roman Empire was in the West, where it led to the formation of the Carolingian Empire. The Empire began as a collection of little states. For most of its history Rome did not control an empire, but more of a military, client, or zone of influence. Even at Rome's height, which was in the 3rd century, the empire was never more than about half the size of its greatest territory since the fall of the western empire in the 5th century, during the fall of the Roman Empire.
During the great age of the Roman Empire the Roman civilization rose. The Romans, as they accumulated power and possessions, adopted to absorb the culture of the peoples they conquered. As time went by the Roman people became more connected to the lands they conquered because of the domination of the civilization they imposed. At first, Rome's influence began to spread from Italy to the rest of the Mediterranean region, which she gradually conquered. Rome's influence then expanded westward to the rest of Europe and northward to the edges of the Oceania, where it would stay for centuries and where the Roman conquest would leave many reminders of its strength. The Romans later also reached to the British Isles and North Africa, where they established dominions that became the heart of the Imperial Roman culture later on. d2c66b5586
