He had a lot of controversy with contemporary theologian, Dr. Muqbil ibn Haadeem (1653–1712), in regard to Ibn Kathir's views on the Trinity. Dr. Alalwani claimed that Ibn Taimiyyah (d. 847 AH/1442 CE) had proved the impossibility of the Trinity in his book Tafseer al-Kabeer, which Ibn Kathir quoted in his book Tafsir al-Kabeer as supporting his claim that the Trinity is un-Islamic. Ibn Kathir's Hanbali school of thought, which he inherited from Ibn Taimiyyah, held that the Qur'an was the only source of Islamic law and that only dur et-tahrir i.e. an accepted, established religion was required for the right to rule and government. It also deemed that the trinity cannot be realized and that the doctrine of Trinity is un-Islamic. Dr. Alalwani believed that the trinity is a Christian concept and that this belief was evident in the books of ibn Kathir himself as early as his earlier books such as Tafsir al-Kabeer and al-Tarek.

The view of Ibn Kathir about Tirmidhi, who was said to have narrated the Hadith from Abu Huraira, has also been disputed[19][20]. In the Tirmidhi Ahadith collected by Tabari, the founder of Tirmidhi narrates the Hadith in question from Abu Huraira without mentioning the name of Abu Huraira. According to Tabari, Tirmidhi also says that all the narrators are of the same rank, which means that the narrators had narrated the Hadith directly from Abu Huraira. This shows that Ibn Kathir was misusing the traditions of Tirmidhi.[21]
