Translanguaging would be one way to embrace a new type of translanguaging: for those who want to learn languages from videos. This is one thing that we focus on in this study. This study considers the extent to which the practice of subtitling videos on Weibo may offer a way to learn languages. Specifically, it looks at the way in which video bloggers are using instant messaging to make comments in fluent languages, and making video clips to record their thoughts and feelings. A Weibo video blogger that has used YouTube as the platform for her most popular videos is interviewed. The interview reveals, to the best of our knowledge, the first-ever case of a Chinese person who has made an attempt to learn a foreign language through YouTube. The interview reveals that the Weibo video blogger has not only learned English through YouTube, but has also used it as the platform to express her thoughts and feelings, and to communicate her ideas on topics such as culture and lifestyle. Her subtitling practice allows her to learn and reflect on these ideas in the context of Weibo. In this sense, video blogs offer us a new and exciting way to learn languages. Now, the question is: How can we translate Weibo video blogs? In the Chinese language, we don't have equivalent terms for subtitling and translation.
In sum, from the perspective of the socio-cultural world of Weibo, this study offers a richer understanding of the performativity of the growing phenomenon of visual translation on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. Specifically, it offers scholars and practitioners of translanguaging an opportunity to reflect on the emergence of 'translanguaging'. That is, it calls for a critical analysis of the technological, social, and cultural dimensions of digital media work, including a focus on the modes of communication that are enabled and constrained by these technologies. Drawing on this approach, we contribute to understanding the potentialities and limits of translanguaging in the digital age, and in particular that of a social media platform.
