In early 1969, Winter rented a room in a boarding house on East 49th Street in New York City. The owner was a woman named Joanne, and Winter used to visit her to get laid. One day, Joanne invited a man named Black Diamond to her house, and the two began hitting it off. Black Diamond was a New York native who had formerly worked for the now-defunct National Broadcasters Corp. As the two became friends, they got to talking about music, and Black Diamond ended up telling Winter about a musician named Lenny Williams. Winter was familiar with Lenny Williams. He had toured with Williams in the 1960s, and Williams's sound was similar to Winter's. Williams had released his own album for Atco Records in 1969, called Lenny Williams Sings the Blues, and that was the reason that Winter wanted to record for Columbia. However, Lenny Williams was signed to Paramount Records, and a Columbia deal was out of the question.
Around this time, Winter also started making appearances at blues festivals, and he was chosen to open a bunch of rock festivals around the US. He was the opening act for Bob Dylan on April 5, 1969, at the Newport Folk Festival, and he was the main act at the Toronto Folk Festival on June 1. He opened the Atlanta International Pop Festival on July 29, the Monterey Pop Festival on August 18, and he performed at the Woodstock Festival on August 15. (He joined Isaac Hayes' band, the Stylistics, for the Woodstock Festival, but they only played once. Winter joined the team of musicians for the Woodstock II Festival in 1970, but they were not allowed to play after the festival ended due to a riot in Washington, D.C.)
