The first and only film directed by the prolific French auteur Louis Malle (1942- ), it is a semi-autobiographical tale of a young, gay Algerian man named Louison (Louis Malle himself) who in the late 1950s attempts to enter the French mainstream, encountering unexpected dangers along the way. It is Louison's passionate relationship with a French-Algerian man named Bruno (Olivier Gourmet) that changes his life, as it has with many other gay and lesbian Algerians during the time of the struggle against colonialism in Africa. 1978.
