Mega Man X2: Sons of Liberty is a third-person action game, which is part of the Mega Man X series. It is a direct continuation of Mega Man X with the same plot and game design. It has been released three years after Mega Man X, and also includes bosses from 3, 6, 7, and 8 as alternate versions of enemies. Mega Man X2: Sons of Liberty was released for the Playstation 2, Game Boy Advance and the Microsoft Xbox video game console worldwide on November 21, 2005.
The game features 23 missions across five chapters, with the player's goal being to stop Dr. Wily from unleashing his creation, the nanomachine-powered race of crossovers called The Mavericks. Each Mavericks consists of a robot at the top and a humanoid that functions as the brain. Wily's goal is to send the robots on a quest to gain enough levels to gain access to the brain, and then start a battle so that he can take control of it and rule the world. The player controls Mega Man, fighting his way through a number of different worlds containing Mavericks. This aspect of the game is the main difference from previous Mega Man games, in that the player is now playing as a Robot Master, who is one of Dr. Wily's creations, and not as, or as a descendant of, the original Robot Master. The player also has the ability to revive fallen Robot Masters, some of which include the original Mega Man and Zero, which have appeared in various Mega Man games throughout the series.
