Intended as a follow up to their highly successful Hulu series House Husbands, Canadian director Jason Priestley reunites with lead actor Ryan Scott Pelley in Cas & Dylan, a sweet but sometimes funny buddy movie about two Canadian best friends who are embarking on a cross-country road trip together.It's a quintessential road trip movie, with characters who laugh as they bicker, hit patches of tension, and hit patches of tenderness as they recount their lives and support each other through difficult times.Pelley portrays Cap, a man who grew up in the remote part of Ontario and has moments of deep regret in his own life. He makes the mistake of selling his partnership in a video-rental store after he comes back from an extended trip to Europe. He holds on to one of his best friends and his dog, Cas, and is determined to make the best decision he can.Meanwhile, Cap's old buddy Dylan (Dreyfuss), a free-spirited bohemian living in Vancouver, is finally settled in his own life. He's in a serious relationship with his partner Natalie, and after finding out about Cap's past, he promises to come to Europe and take Cap and Cas on a road trip around the world. They start out together but as the two unplanned road trips begin to take their toll on them, they find they're snapped at dawn in a shared sleeping bag, like comrades in arms.The film was inspired by the pair of friends' real-life road trip that took them to the frozen lakes of Manitoba and the barren prairie of Saskatchewan.I really liked the film, I didn't expect to. I wasn't sure what to expect from Priestley but he surprised me with a charming story, good performances, and a big score. This is a very Canadian film, mostly in tone and character, and Priestley tells it in a way that's only slightly exaggerated. There are a few predictable plot turns, but the film overcomes that. It gives the characters room to breathe, as well as us viewers, and shows the flaws of all three of them.I love when characters you come to know grow up. Cap and Dylan are two people who've always been best friends and the natural affection between them is obvious.Dreyfuss does an absolutely amazing job as Dylan. d2c66b5586
